AuthorBodycoat, RonaldDescriptionThe Beacon Cinema was constructed in 1937 and was designed by the architect S Rosenthal of Perth, and built for Swan Suburban Picture Co. Ltd. The cinema accommodated 500 people (according to one report) on the ground floor level and 150 people in the first floor lounge. The architect's drawings show the name of the cinema as "ASTORIA", very much in 1930s character. The Hampton Road "front" to the building is in the Art Deco style of decoration; the auditorium is in a simple, utilitarian form of red brick with pitched and gable roof. A row of four lock-up shops runs southwards down Hampton Road, built later this century, and a single storied house dating from around the turn of the century survives in the north west corner of the site fronting onto Wray Avenue. This house was extended and altered in the 1950s. The cinema was subsequently converted to a supermarket for the current owners.Imprint[Cottesloe, W.
