AuthorRichards, OlineDescriptionSamson House, the former home of Sir Frederick Samson, long-time mayor of Fremantle, and other members of the Samson family, is now owned by the Western Australian Museum. When the Museum took over the management of the property in the early 1980s, restoration work was undertaken, mainly on the house, and it was opened to the public as a historic house museum in 1987. The late Victorian house, as well as outbuildings, a timber cottage and the grounds, have been assessed as significant, and warrant inclusion on the State Register of Heritage Place, although at this stage only part of the property is registered. The grounds surrounding Samson House occupy 3035 m2 or 3/4 acre and feature two landmark Norfolk pines, lawns, rose garden and rustic water garden. The grounds, which are the subject of this report, are however much more than an attractive setting for the house, they record a century of domestic life spanning two generations of the Samson family and reflect both colonial and 20th century experience, technology, family life and middle class social values.
