Project periscope an account of the Periscope Memorial on Monument Hill, Fremantle

AuthorKerr, G. A. 1911-DescriptionIn times of war, the port of Fremantle was the embarkation point for many Australian men and women leaving for service overseas. Also, during the Second World War, the Royal Navy 4th and 8th submarine flotillas were based at the port. On Monument Hill above the port, there is a periscope - looking out to sea. It was erected by members of the Submarine Old Comrades Association (W.A.), as a memorial to their comrades who did not return from tbe sea battles of the Second World War. Installed originally in the British submarine HMS/M Tabard, the periscope was made available and now stands in a specially landscaped area in the north-west corner of the memorial park. This is the story of how the memorial came to be, how the idea was first raised, and the people involved in providing the periscope and transporting it to Fremantle. It was unveiled on Trafalgar Day, 21st October 1972, by the Governor of Western Australia Major General Sir Douglas Kendrew and presented to the City of Fremantle and the people of Western Australia.
