Fremantle Prison Conservation and Future use : conservation plan
DESCRIPTION
Corporate AuthorFremantle Prison Conservation and Future Use (Project); Building Management Authority of Western AustraliaDescriptionIn 1988 the Government of Western Australia resolved that following the closure of Fremantle Prison, it would retain ownership and control of the building and accept responsibility for its conservation and management. The process of determining future conservation and development at the prison has been managed on three levels: a Ministerial committee, and interdepartmental Steering Committee, and an interdepartmental Planning Team led by a Building Management Authority Project Manager. This Conservation Plan document summarises the research and analysis contained in the individual reports on places. It provides a general history of the prison and endeavours to explain the ideology underlying its original design and subsequent modifications as its role evolved over time. The significance of the prison as determined from the archival and site research is explained and summarised in Statements of Cultural Significance for the prison and its associated outlying buildings. Conservation recommendations, developed to guide future actions with a view to retaining, recovering or, at least, minimising any possible loss of significance, are stated for the eight sites and for the prison as a whole.
