Commonwealth governmentDescriptionOver the 1984/85 swimming season, the Commonwealth Government (Community Employment Programme) and the Fremantle City Council jointly funded a Mature Age Swimming Programme. This programme was conducted at the Fremantle Aquatic Centre with any person over the age of 21 eligible to participate. Nine long term unemployed people were employed to supervise and instruct the participants under the direction of the Aquatic Centre Manager. These people were all trained on the job and gained the following qualifications: Austswim Certificate (Teacher of Swimming), St. John's First Aid Certificate, and Bronze Medallion (Royal Lifesaving Society). This report is an analysis of the programme including responses to a questionnaire issued to participants, the instructors views of the programme and recommendations for improvements. The report was written and compiled by the supervisors employed on the programme and illustrates the expertise gained by these peopleImprint[Fremantle, W.A.
