J.Corporate AuthorIndian Ocean Centre for Peace StudiesDescriptionThe Indian Ocean littoral is characterised by the presence of numerous port cities which were established or expanded by European colonial powers between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. These settlements provided the gateways through which the imperial forces of France, the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany and, most commonly, Britain were able to gain control of what were frequently resource rich hinterlands. As these empires waxed, the port cities prospered economically and expanded physically. Twentieth century political changes such as decolonisation, and technological changes such as containerisation and the growth of air travel have caused many of these ports to lose some of their former roles. Transport and commercial activities are often relocated and old buildings and structures abandoned. Over the last twenty years, this economic and physical vacuum has frequently been filled by the redevelopment of many waterfront and port areas for tourism and conservation purposes.
