AuthorCampbell, RexCorporate AuthorFremantle (W.A. : Municipality). CouncilEdition1st ed.DescriptionThe Fremantle City Council from 1980 - 1987 set about establishing Fremantle as a 'bicycle friendly city'. Using detailed field monitoring and evaluation data gathered over those years, this report analyses the cost-effectiveness of their bicycle planning, and the transport effectiveness of Fremantle's safer cycling routes. The analysis shows that the Fremantle Network Bike Plan was a worthwhile economic investment for the community. A 12% annual increase in the cycling population brought transport and health savings to that community of $420,000 per annum, compared to the implementation cost of the bike plan at $273,000pa. In addition to social and environmental benefits this meant a benefit to cost ratio, in economic terms alone, of 1.46 to 1. Some conclusions are also presented on the effectiveness of different cycling facilities, in particular the need to maintain route continuity and speed for cyclists as a priority issue, and the need for other Councils to encourage cycling and promote their achievementsImprintPerth, W.A.
