AuthorDavidson, RaeleneDescriptionThis thesis presents a picture of the lives of some of society's outcasts and the way in which they were dealt with by the authorities and the communities in which they lived. Despite the diversity of backgrounds and career-patterns of Western Australia's prostitutes it is clear that overall their lives underwent basic changes between the goldrushes and the Second World War. From a situation of relatively high earnings, a large degree of freedom but little protection against exploitation, violence or disease in the 1890's there was a continuing trend toward less dramatic earnings, less freedom of movement, greater notoriety and more protection against violence, exploitation and disease.
