AuthorSquibb, John P.DescriptionThis dissertation investigates and analyses what impact World War II had on the industry and community of the Port City of Fremantle. Unlike the Great War the World War was to concern everyone, not only because it was close to Australia but because it brought involvement to all. Three particular elements are discussed in this work: an explanation of the economic base to show what Fremantle's function was and provide a background for later chapters - this is developed by tracing what changes occurred during and due to the war in industry and particularly that of the major industry, the waterfront. Secondly, the social problems which arose due to the conscription of nearly all men under 45 which left the city comprised of women, children and elderly men facing the real threat of invasion in 1942, and maintain the social fabric of the city.
