The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.
The following places form a significant group and contribute to the streetscape of Barnett Street: 12, 13, 14, 16, 18 & 20.HistoryBarnett St is named after Henry Calvert Barnett whose first government appointment was in 1868. Barnett was Superintendent of the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum 1872 and Colonial Surgeon until 1895. He was also a Member of the first Medical Board, 1894.
A house was built on the lot in 1903 for John Henry Payne. The first occupant was Mark Chapman, a customs officer.Physical DescriptionHouse, 20 Barnett Street is a single storey stone house with tuck pointed brick quoining to the corners, window and door openings. The zincalume roof has a gable. The house sits facing north and overlooking Fremantle Park. There is a bull nosed verandah supported by timber posts and a timber double hung sash window.
