The house is first recorded in the Post Office directories in 1899 and the occupant was William Findlay. In the previous year, 1898, the houses are not numbered however Findlay was resident in the street and it is probable that the house was in existence. Findlay is described as a contractor and the house was named ‘Lydiaville’ in the directory. Findlay was also the owner of properties at 14 and 16 Carnac Street. Prior to 1898, Findlay is not recorded as living in the street and there are few properties in the street. It is therefore assumed that the house was built in approximately 1898 although further research of rates books for the period would assist in determining the date of construction and the original owner. The 1908 sewerage plan of the site shows this stone house had a verandah across the full front façade. The plan of the house was a simple ‘L’ shape with Physical Description10 Carnac Street is a single storey, limestone, brick and tile house with a symmetrical facade designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.
