The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture. ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryCarnac Street is at an elevation from which Carnac Island can be seen, but not the other islands, possibly the reason for the name. Carnac Island was named after Lieut. John Ruett Carnac, of H.M. Frigate Success. This house was formerly 44 Carnac Street; the numbering changed in 1934/5. House, 26 Carnac Street was built prior to June 1908 as it is shown on the sewerage plan for that year. It is probable that the house was built c 1899 when it first appears in the Post Office Directories. The occupant in that year was John Smith. He had been resident in Carnac Street the previous year but it is not clear if it was at 26 Carnac Street. He remained resident in the house for some years. The 1908 sewerage plan of this site shows that the timber cottage has a front verandah and a rear verandah across half of the rear façade. In the back yard is a large timber building, possibly a shed, with a galvanised iron addition. A timber closet is the only other structure shown in the back yard. The entire boundary of the property is fenced. This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Red: "Significantly contributing to the unique character of Fremantle") In 1979/81, a photograph of the cottage shows that it is in good condition with a cyclone mesh fence on the front boundary. The front façade is clad with sheeting although the southern side is weatherboard as shown on the photograph for the duplex at 28/30 Carnac Street. The front verandah is partially enclosed with balustrade height sheeting across the front and fully enclosed at the ends with sheeting, possibly asbestos. Physical Description26 Carnac Street is a single storey,timber, fibro and iron house with a symmetrical facade designed as an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture. The walls are timber framed and clad with fibre cement sheeting. The roof is gabled and clad with corrugated iron. The facade has a front door with fanlight flanked on either side by double hung sash windows. The verandah has a separate corrugated iron roof and is supported by square timber posts.
