The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryThe land on which House 8 Coode Street is located was originally Lot 1500 but with subdivision of the original lot this changed to Lot 2. The first record of the house in the Fremantle Rate Books in 1930/31. William Ernest Bastin was the owner of the house. Post Office Directories are not conclusive about early residents, as numbers were not allocated to the street until 1939. At that time the resident was James A. Coleman. The 1947 aerial photograph (Landgate) shows four house in Coode Street between High Street and Holland Street: No 9 on the west side, and Nos. 6, 8 and 10 on the east. The 1962 sewerage map (No. 2156) shows No. 8 as a small weatherboard and galvanised iron house with a full length front verandah. There are some small outbuildings close to the house and a well in the yard. Later aerial photos (Landgate) show that the house was possibly reroofed between 1985-1995, and also possibly extended to the rear in that time. This place was added to the Heritage List and the Municipal Heritage Inventory on 10 January 2018.Physical DescriptionHouse, 8 Coode Street is a single storey, timber framed and Zincalume clad house with a symmetrical facade designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are timber framed and clad with painted weatherboards. The roof is hipped and clad with Zincalume. The façade is symmetrical with a central front door flanked on either side by three triple pane timber framed windows. The verandah has a continuous Zincalume roof supported by timber posts with decorative timber brackets and a timber balustrade. The house is set above the ground on timber stumps, and is more elevated on one side due to the sloping ground.
