There has been confusion in the recent past that it was numbered 12 Crandon Street. The house was built in 1897 and was added to in 1898 with a single storey timber framed weatherboard clad cottage added to the rear of the property. In 1919, a timber framed music room was added to the front of the building and an attic room and an attached part brick and part timber framed kitchen and bathroom with a skillion roof was added to the rear. A freestanding two storey building was constructed in the rear northwest of the property. A cellar was also in existence. The resident, Mr Butson, was a music teacher and influential member of the music community in Perth. He was the organist for Wesley Church in Fremantle and then for St John Anglican Church. He was a founding member and later made a life member of the West Australian Music Teachers Association and on the organisation as Vice President, Member of Council and Auditor Butson used the house as a resident for himself and his family and taught piano lessons in the front room. He also repaired musical instruments in the first floor of the outbuilding in the back yard. Butson died in 1951 and his wife Mary lived on at the house until the mid to late 1950s. Subsequent owners were Gerard Johannes Wiehemeyer who lived at the house with his wife until the early 1960s. Later owners who leased out the property were F. & E. Mastrantonio, Luici Brusachi, A. Di Re, and O Stazzonelli. In 1980, the property was transferred to Leslie Dean Boult and then in the same year May Elisabeth Alice Smyth who lived at the house until 1986. This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Red: "Significantly contributing to the unique character of Fremantle") In 1986 ownership was transferred to the Minister of Education and the place was leased out to various tenants, including a noted pigeon fancier, Frank ‘the Birdman’ Morris. He modified the house and the two storey building to accommodate his pigeons. From the late 1990s to 2002 the property was vacant. The property was transferred to Jean Tonkinson in 2002 and she undertook major renovations by architect Gerard McCann and won a Fremantle Council Heritage prize for the work.
