ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryHouse, 1 Douglas Street was formerly 15 Douglas Street; numbering changed in 1935/36. The house was constructed in 1898 for the owner and occupier Arthur Frith, a tailor. He and his family which included 4 other people lived at the cottage until 1900. The property was then transferred to William Tanner, a fireman. Tanner occupied the house until 1916 and his family members owned the place until 1932. For some of those years the house was leased to tenants. The 1908 sewerage plan of the site shows that this timber cottage had verandahs across the full width of the front and rear façades. On the back verandah was a water tank and close to the back verandah was a well. At the back of the property were a galvanised iron stables, a timber shed and a timber closet. In 1935/36 the property was transferred to John and Sarah Pedley who owned and occupied the house until at least 1941. In 1950/51, the place was transferred to Edith Margaret Chandler and the place was occupied by Valentine Chandler. . This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Brown: "Positively contributing to the built environment") A photograph of the place in 1979/81 shows that the front verandah had been enclosed with a structure of louvres and asbestos sheeting. The remaining front yard was paved and a cyclone mesh fence was located on the front boundary. The roof was a dark coloured corrugated iron, which was in a relatively poor condition. In 1984, there was another building located in the back yard. The Chandler family owned and occupied the house until 1992. It was then transferred to Jane Hammond. Prior to the commencement of renovations in 1994, photographs were taken of the house, which showed that it was substantially unchanged from 1979/81 although further deteriorated. The back verandah had been completely enclosed with an accumulation of asbestos additions. Photographs taken subsequent to the renovations show that the front verandah enclosure had been removed and a new picket fence constructed on the front boundary. The roof and weatherboards had been replaced.
