The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is a late example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryHouse, 2 Douglas Street was formerly 16 Douglas Street; numbering changed in 1935/36. The first year 2 Douglas Street is clearly recorded in the Post Office Directories is 1905 when the street number is given. However the house may have been built before that date as there were houses in the street but the lack of numbering makes it difficult to be certain. The occupant in 1905 was Charles Smith, contractor and builder. The 1908 sewerage plan of the site shows this stone house had a verandah across the full width of the front façade. At the rear of the building were a timber addition and a bath. In the back yard were two galvanised iron sheds and a timber closet. This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Brown: "Positively contributing to the built environment") A photograph of the place in 1979 shows that the front verandah had been fully enclosed with a structure of brick and glass louvres. The building was in relatively good condition. Photographs of the house taken later, but undated, show that the house was substantially unchanged. A photograph of the house taken in 1987 for a real estate article show that the house had been subject to renovations and additions. The front verandah enclosure had been removed and the stonework revealed in the front façade. Brick quoining was also evident. New rooms had been added to the rear of the property and the original rooms retained their decorative finishes. The property was advertised in 1998 and this photograph shows that timber balustrades had been added to the front verandah. It is noted in this article that the addition at the rear of the building was two storeys.
