The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as fair (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryHouse, 4 Douglas Street was formerly 18 Douglas Street; numbering changed in 1935/36. This house was built in the ratings period of 1901/02. The owner and occupier was a widow, Jane Rudland. She occupied the house until at least 1913/14 but retained part ownership until 1920-21. In that year the property was owned by Jane Rudland and Mrs Stewart. They leased the property to tenant, Denis Ryan. Jane Rudland (nee Doil or Doyle) was born on 23 April 1862 had arrived in the Swan River Colony later that year with her parents. She married Henry Rudland in 1875 and he died in Fremantle in 1897. She remarried Richard Dixon Bryant in 1915. Throughout her life she bore 12 children and died in 1944. In 1920/21 the property was transferred to Miss Mead and occupied by Gertrude Alice Campbell. In 1934/35, the owner was Matthias Thomas Powell and occupied by Edward Deal. The 1908 sewerage plan for the site shows that this timber house had verandahs at the front and rear. In the back yard were a well, a timber shed, and a galvanised iron shed. Physical DescriptionHouse, 4 Douglas Street is a single storey, weatherboard, fibre cement and iron house with an asymmetrical facade constructed in the Federation period. The walls are timber framed and clad with fibre cement sheeting and weatherboards. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with corrugated iron. The facade has a projecting front room with a gable end facing the street. There is a front door flanked by a timber framed casement window. The verandah has a separate corrugated iron roof and is supported by pairs of round steel posts.
