The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is a simple example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as fair to good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryEast Street was the original eastern boundary of the Fremantle townsite. The land on which house 27 East Street stands was vacant in 1911/12 and owned by John J O’Sullivan. In the rate period of 1912/13 a house was built for Francis Walker Major who was the owner/occupier. Major was still the owner/occupier in 1920/21. In 1925/26 the name Charles Hamilton Jacka(l or s??) has been crossed out as the owner/occupier and the name Hewett inserted. In 1930/31 David Morgan Richards is the owner/occupier. Richards owned the property into the early 1940s and had several tenants including Leslie Wright in 1935/36 and James Johnson in 1940/41. The house is on Lot 3 of 898. Physical DescriptionHouse, 27 East Street is a single storey, rendered masonry and tile house with an asymmetrical facade designed as a simple example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture. The walls are rendered masonry. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with tiles. The facade has a projecting front room with timber framed double casement windows under the gable end. The front door with sidelight is centrally located with a timber framed double casement window to one side.
