The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.ArchaeologyConditionHistoryEllen Street was named for Ellen Mangles of Woodbridge, Surrey, England, wife of Sir James Stirling, the Governor. In 1899 two villas were erected on the site for Harry JW Higham, a gentleman. It was later used as a lodging house. The place was purchased by the Fremantle City Council in 1984. Physical DescriptionTwo storey stone and terracotta tile hipped roof house has two large stone chimneys. The dropped verandah returns down the sides of the front section of the house and is supported by a central stone wall and rendered piers with cast iron balustrading.
