The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryEllen Street was named for Ellen Mangles of Woodbridge, Surrey, England, wife of Sir James Stirling, the Governor. The house was built in 1902/03 for RJ Honnor and the first occupant was Frank Lawrence. Honnor joined the mounted police in Fremantle in the late 1890s. He was transferred to Three Springs in 1913 and Beverley in 1918. He resigned in 1922 to take up farming with his sons on their property at Dalwallinu. His wife was Eleanor Iris McMahon, a school teacher who emigrated from Ireland in 1881. A Heritage Assessment was prepared in November 2009 by Heritage and Conservation Professionals for a DA submission to Council (DA0552/09) for a proposed verandah, bbq and pizza oven at the rear. Physical DescriptionHouse, 70 Ellen Street is a single storey tuck pointed and decorative brickwork house with a zincalume hipped roof with a small vented gable and a faceted gable which crowns the faceted bay to the façade. There is a bull nosed verandah supported by timber posts. The timber double hung windows have sixteen panes to the top sash and an entrance arch leads to the front door which has stained leadlight fanlights and sidelights. This place contains a limestone feature.
