The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.ArchaeologyConditionFairHistoryEllen Street was named for Ellen Mangles of Woodbridge, Surrey, England, wife of Sir James Stirling, the Governor. The house was built in 1901/02 for Caroline Carrick. The first occupant was Thomas James Carrick. In the late 2010s the property was subdivided into 81 and 81A Ellen Street. The historic house was renumbered 81A and a new house was constructed at 81 Ellen Street. In 2019 the heritage listing for 81 and 81A Ellen Street were reviewed as part of the Annual Update of The Heritage List and Local Heritage Survey. On 25 June 2019 Fremantle Council resolved to add 81A to the Heritage List and to delete 81 Ellen Street. The Municipal Heritage Inventory management categories were also to be modified with 81A to become a Level 2 and 81 Ellen a Historic Record Only.Physical DescriptionA single storey rendered house and second storey turret on the south west corner. The zincalume hipped roof has a half timbered gable and a decorative painted brick chimney. The dropped verandah is supported by timber posts on part low wall balustrading and timber frieze. The entrance is on the west elevation accessed through archways.
