ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryHouse, 9 Grey Street was formerly 35 Grey street; renumbering occurred in 1935/36. The house was built for the owner John Wesley Bateman in 1893. Bateman was a prominent local merchant and landowner. He built the adjacent properties at 11 and 13 Grey Street at the same time. Bateman leased the house to tenants during the period of his ownership. At the time of construction the house is recorded as being of six rooms. The property was sewered in 1915. Bateman owned the property until at least 1919/20 and some of that time it was jointly owned with Lewis Lindsay Bateman. Occupants included; William Knox, manager of Robert Harper & Co; George Saurmann, clerk; Robert Gibson, accountant; Arthur Dendy, accountant; George Davis Oliver, tailor, Frank Nicholas, accountant and commercial agent; James Coen, Secretary of the Fremantle Trades Hall; John Tinkler; and Sarah Dickens. In 1929/30, the property was owned and occupied by Margaret Lydia Mullin. The 1908 sewerage plan of the site shows this timber house with a verandah at the front and rear. The two ends of the rear verandah had been enclosed with timber, one of which formed the bathroom. Adjacent to the bathroom was a water tank. In the back yard was a timber washhouse in addition to a timber shed and closet. A photograph of the house in 1978 shows that the house was in good condition with a high fence on the front boundary made of horizontal timber planks. This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Red: "Significantly contributing to the unique character of Fremantle") In 1985, it is recorded that the interior of the house had been partly renovated with the enclosure of the back verandah to create a new bathroom and laundry. By 1994, the timber fence had been replaced with a low limestone wall on the front boundary and a new two storey residence had been built in the back yard.
