The house was built for the owner John Wesley Bateman in 1893. Bateman was a prominent local merchant and landowner. He built the adjacent properties at 9 and 13 Grey Street at the same time. At the time of construction the house is recorded as being of six rooms. The property was sewered in 1915. Bateman leased the house to tenants during the period of his ownership. Bateman owned the property until at least 1919/20 and some of that time it was jointly owned with Lewis Lindsay Bateman. Occupants included; George Sowrmann, clerk; Arthur Grey Knox; David Gordon Taylor, agent; and William Day. By 1929/30, the property was owned by Ada Caroline Cornish and occupied by Frank Cornish. She continued to own the property until at least 1951/52 and the house was either occupied by Frank Cornish or Loveday Robertson. The owners and occupiers in 1956/60 were members of the Delaney family and in 1960/64 the owners and occupiers were William and Anne O’Hern. Later owners were; Antonia and Maria Vinci; and Alan Lloyd and Mary Nixon. The 1908 sewerage plan of the site shows this timber house with a verandah at the front and rear. The two ends of the rear verandah had been enclosed with timber, one of which formed the bathroom. Adjacent to the bathroom was a water tank. In the back yard was a timber washhouse in addition to a timber shed and closet. It is identical in form to the adjacent properties at 9 and 13 Grey Street. A photograph of the house in 1978 shows that the house had a fake brick cladding and the front verandah had been enclosed with a structure of louvres and the same imitation brick cladding. A low limestone wall was present on the front boundary. This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance.
