The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as fair to good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryHampton Road was originally called Prison Road. It derives its name from John Stephen Hampton (1810-1869), the Governor of WA from 1862-68. He was previously Comptroller of Convicts in Tasmania. His son, G. E. Hampton, was Acting Comptroller-General of the Fremantle Convict Establishment. Lot 1 of 747 was vacant in 1915/16 and owned by Timothy Flynn. In 1922/23 ownership changed to John Wright Lynch who had a cottage built at this time. Lynch was the owner/occupier from the time the cottage was built and at least until 1951/52. The house was originally numbered 12 Hampton and changed to 2 Hampton Road in the 1930s. The current number was assigned in 1951/52. Physical DescriptionSingle storey painted brick and terracotta tile hipped roof house.
