The place is significant because, when viewed from the street, it is a substantially intact example of a commercial building which contributes to the very significant Old Port City of Fremantle. The place is of social significance as evidenced by its classification by the National Trust.ArchaeologyConditionGoodHistoryThe lot was owned by the Roman Catholic church from 1855 (Bishop Serra). It was a cottage and shops. The cottage was for a time used by the Harbour Master's crew (c1886). The Tobias Bros, merchants, occupied a new building and warehouse from 1898. It was later occupied by the WA Commercial Travelers' Club, before they built new premises at 11 Cantonment Street. The building was sold out of the church c1920. It was then a Stevedoring Company from 1930. Alterations to the 1898 building were carried out in 1964 and 1968. Currently (2002), offices and residential-apartments.Physical DescriptionTwo storey rendered building with a zero set back from the pavement. There is a decorative parapet with a central pediment and decorative brackets.
