This duplex half was 51 Howard Street. Renumbering occurred in 1935/36. This house is first accurately recorded in the Post office Directories in 1899 and the occupants for the two dwellings were, for 5 was John R Ross and in 7 was Arthur Sanderson. Further research of the rates books and certificates of title may determine the exact date of construction and the original owner of the place. The 1908 sewerage plan, which shows this site indicates that a stone wall was present on the western boundary. A stone wall is also present on a portion of the eastern boundary. The limestone walls constructed in the late 19th and early 20th century functioned as property boundaries and retaining walls. The material used was local limestone and frequently the walls were constructed at the time of construction of the original buildings on the site. In c.1992 new residences designed by architect Brain Klopper were built at the rear of the lot. A photograph of the house in 1996 shows that the stone duplex had a tile roof and the front verandah had later additions. Internally the house had been renovated at this time. This place was identified in the "Heritage Report on: 19th century limestone walls and steps in Fremantle" prepared by Silvana Grassadonia, for the City of Fremantle, 1986.
