ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryHouse, 13 Howard Street was formerly numbered 43 Howard Street; the numbering was changed in 1935/36. This house is first recorded accurately in the Post Office Directories in 1899 and the occupant was Thomas Nelson. Further research of the rates books for this period may determine the exact date of construction and the original owner of the property. The 1908 sewerage plan of the site shows this stone house as a simple rectangular form with a verandah across the front and rear of the building. Added to the rear of the building are several timber and brick additions. A veranda was included in this addition. These buildings may have been for additional accommodation. In the back yard were a timber stables and a brick closet. This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Red: "Significantly contributing to the unique character of Fremantle") A photograph of the house in 1978 shows that the place was in good condition. The front façade of the house was rendered and the roof was corrugated iron or zincalume. Most of the original features were intact. The original verandah posts had been replaced with pillars and the low brick wall with metal detailing on the front boundary is also not original. In 1990 a new laundry was built in the rear of the lot designed by architect Bernard Seeber and it is clear that the house had been extended at the rear prior to this date. Prior to 2004 the house had undergone further renovations including the construction of a studio in the rear of the lot.
