The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Inter-War California Bungalow style of architecture. ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryHouse 20 Howard St was built between 1934 and 1939 by Henry Cecil Matthews who owned and occupied it. A newspaper article in Local History files says this house was occupied for nearly fifty years by Nunzia Iannello who became Western Australia’s oldest woman, dying in 1996 at the age of 107 years. The house is Lot 3of 616.Physical DescriptionHouse, 20 Howard Street is a single storey brick and tile house constructed in the Inter-War California Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are painted rendered brick. The roof is hipped with two street facing gables, and clad with tiles. There is a rendered brick chimney with chimney pot evident. The gables have horizontal and timber decorative panelling, similar to No 18 Howard Street. The verandah is under one gable roof, supported by rendered columns and a rendered half wall balustrade, which has a diamond shaped inset motif to the front. Large trees prevent further description of the front elevation. The house is situated at street level.
