Heritage ThemesDEMOGRAPHIC SETTLEMENT & MOBILITY: SettlementsStatement Of SignificanceDuplex, 16 and 18 James Street is a good example of an attached pair of stone residences dating from the period of expansion of Fremantle in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that contributes to the heritage character of James Street and the adjacent Quarry Street area.ArchaeologyConditionHistoryLot 858 was subdivided in 1883/84. Two thirds of the lot was owned at this time by Elias Solomon, the other third by Henry Sharpe, a labourer. Mr Sharpe erected a cottage on his portion of the lot. In 1896 the vacant portion of the lot was divided into equal thirds. In 1900 two cottages were erected for Thomas E White on one third and then in 1901/02 two further cottages were erected on the remaining third. These last appear to relate to Duplex, 16 and 18 James St and were built for William George Armstrong. The first occupants of numbers 16 and 18 were John Vardy, an engineer and Richard Charles Gibbons, a steward. The street numbers were originally 50 and 52 but changed in 1938/39. Physical DescriptionDuplex, 16 and 18 James Street is a single storey rendered stone and brick attached pair which have a gabled roof.
