The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. ConditionCondition assessed as fair to good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryRate books indicate that two dwellings were constructed on Lot 1036 Swanbourne Street in 1898, one facing Swanbourne Street and the other, a four-room weatherboard cottage, facing KnutsFord Street. Neither is shown on an 1898 PWd plan of Fremantle, suggesting they may have been completed late in the year. A 1909 plan shows the KnutsFord Street residence as a small timber cottage with a verandah across the whole front elevation and a small room enclosing the west end of the verandah across the rear elevation. It is sited close to both KnutsFord Street and the eastern lot boundary. A 1913 plan appears to show no change. A 1984 plan shows the place with a small rear extension, probably of only one room. The two residences on the lot were constructed for Walter Edward Luyer, who lived in the Swanbourne Street residence and initially rented the KnutsFord Street residence to William Ernest Love, a commercial agent.
