The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as poor (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryThis house was formerly 55 Russell Street; the renumbering occurred in 1934/35. The house was not evident in the 1908 sewerage plan of the site. It is first recorded in 1923 as a house with the street numbering of 53 and 55 Russell Street and occupied by Robert Ellis. It could be that the two houses were built at this time. In 1924, the two houses were separately recorded. Mrs N. G. Illingworth occupied 1 Russell Street. During the 1930s the house was occupied by Mrs J. Tickle. A photograph of the house in 1978 shows the house is in relatively good condition with most original features. The ‘L’ shaped front verandah has been partially enclosed with balustrade height panelling. An asbestos fence is located on the property boundary. It is full height on the Marine Terrace frontage and low facing Russell Street. In 1989, a photograph shows the house has been little changed except the verandah enclosure has been replaced with full height glass. The garden is more abundant and obscures the house. Physical Description1 Russell Street is a single storey rendered masonry house with an asymmetrical façade constructed in c. 1923. There is a projecting front room with casement window and a front door and double hung sash window under the verandah. Large trees obscure views to the front façade. There is a metal deck fence to the front boundary line.AssociationPlace UseOriginal Use – RESIDENTIAL: OtherPresent Use – RESIDENTIAL: Single storey residenceArchitectural StylesIntegrity/AuthenticityMedium degree of integrity (original intent partially clear, current use compatible, high long term sustainability).
