The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of typical workers houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as fair to good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryThis house was formerly 48 Russell; renumbering occurred in 1935/36. City of Fremantle Local History Collection records show that the house was built in 1887 for George Cornish. He is described as a draper in 1887 and a book seller in 1888. He is also associated with the properties at 2/4 Russell Street. He owned and occupied the house until at least 1890. Note: The owners in 2006 supplied a construction date of 1882. The 1908 sewerage plan of this house shows that it had verandahs across the front and rear of the building. It is designated as a brick building but it is apparent that it is constructed of stone. A bathroom was located on the back verandah and a timber addition and a tank were located adjacent to the back of the house. In the back yard were two galvanised iron stables and a brick closet. This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Purple: "Of architectural and historic significance in its own right.”) A photograph of the house in 1978 shows that the house was in good condition with original features intact. In the 1980s the property was owned by Daga Wall. In 2003 it was owned and occupied by Leone and Tony Femia. The house underwent additions prior to 2002 and then more extensive renovations after 2003. Physical Description6 Russell Street is a single storey, limestone and iron house with a symmetrical facade designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are limestone. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The facade has a central front door with fanlight flanked either side by double hung sash windows. The verandah has a separate corrugated iron roof and is supported by chamfered timber posts. There is a limestone and iron wall to the front boundary line and concrete steps leading up to the verandah level.
