It changed to Stephen Street in c1930. In 1962 spelling was changed to Stevens Street, probably to honour Jimmy Stevens, Councillor (1905-1929; 1929-1943). This street address was formerly 11a and 11b Church Street. The 1908 sewerage plan of this site shows that this lot had a stone wall on the front boundary which is likely to have been built at the same time as the original house. The stone wall stretched across five lots finishing at the boundary between 11a and 11b. There was only a break in the wall at the street address, 11 Stevens Street. Further research may help to establish if the wall was built at the time of the construction of the individual homes if it was an initiative of the local council. This place was identified in the "Heritage Report on 19th century limestone walls and steps in Fremantle" prepared by Silvana Grassadonia, for the City of Fremantle, 1986. The wall type is described as "wall practically or completely replacing the original one'. Information from 1995 indicates that the homes on this site were built in the 1970s. In 2000 the place was included in the Fremantle Municipal Heritage Inventory in the Limestone Features category. The place was put on the City of Fremantle Heritage List on 8 March 2007. In 2018 Fremantle City Council approved the removal of the place from the Heritage List and Municipal Heritage Inventory because the historic limestone features were not present. The Inherit listing was retired from public view in 2019.Physical DescriptionThe front boundary walls to 11 and 11A Stephen Street are constructed from face brickwork laid in stretcher bond. The walls partially retain the steeply sloping front gardens. The brick type and construction details to the walls matches their respective c. 1970s houses suggesting that they were built at the same time. There is no visual evidence of the early limestone walls shown on the 1908 sewerage map.AssociationJames Lilly (prominent Fremantle identity)Place UseOriginal Use – OTHER: OtherOther Use – OTHER: OtherPresent Use – OTHER: OtherIntegrity/AuthenticityLow integrity Low degree of authenticity as no original fabric remains on site.
