The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Federation Bungalow style of architecture. ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as fair to good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryA map titled P.W.D. W.A. 6409 and dated 1898 shows no dwellings on this part of Swanbourne Street. The P.W.D. plan no. 13017 dted 1913 shows a stone or brick dwelling with a timber or iron verandah at the front, protruding forward on the left hand side of the house facing it from the road, while the back of the house shows an extended left hand side, with a timber or iron section on the right hand side of the back section. From a photo dated c2000, the house is constructed of red brick with dark coloured tuck pointing on the front and 2 lines of cream coloured render 1 brick wide; an iron roof; French doors onto the front verandah with lead-light glass squares. The sides of the building are painted brick. The verandah has a concrete floor, approximately 3 steps up to the verandah, brick and concrete rendered low walls surrounding the verandah, and square lattice on the upper part of the verandah.Physical DescriptionHouse, 1 Swanbourne Street is a single storey brick and iron house constructed in the Federation Bungalow style of Architecture. The walls are red brick with cream rendered bands to the front and rendered at the side. The roof is hipped and gabled and clad with corrugated iron. There is a painted brick chimney evident. The verandah is under a faceted bay supported by rendered pillars with lattice work infill to the top. The facade under the verandah roof has timber framed doors and windows.
