The named was changed to avoid confusion with the intersecting Hampton Road. It became Alexander Road, after Laurence Alexander, Mayor 1901-1902, and a representative of Falk & Co. The street name was again changed to avoid confusion with Alexandra Road in East Fremantle, and became Wray Avenue in 1923. It was named for William E Wray, at one time with the Education Dept as Truant Inspector, and a resident of the street. He was on the Fremantle Tramways Board and Mayor of Fremantle, 1914-1918. This duplex was formerly numbered 18/20 Wray Avenue; renumbering occurred in 1934/35. This half of the duplex was formerly 18 Wray Avenue. This building was constructed in 1897 for Frederick Simpson who was a pioneer fruit importer. One of the first occupants was S Ah Cheong, a shopkeeper. The property remained the property of the Simpson family until the early 1950s. Later owners were Gertie Beckman; Athanase and Anastasia Athanassiou; and Jovo Medin and Slavka Medin. The 1908 sewerage plan of this site shows that this brick building is a duplex in which the two halves are mirror images of each other. There are large verandahs at the front and a timber addition at the rear. In the back yard are brick closets for each duplex half. In 1956 alterations and additions were made to the place for the owner Mr G. Christo. These alterations consisted of new laundry and bathrooms at the rear of the building and the repositioning of the steps providing access to the first floor. A photograph of the place in 1979 shows the two storey building is substantially intact in its original form. The first floor is rendered and the ground floor is painted render. This place was identified by the Fremantle Society in 1979/80 as being of cultural heritage significance. (Coded: Purple: "Of architectural and historic significance in its own right.”) Physical DescriptionCommercial Building, 16-18 Wray Avenue is a double storey, rendered masonry, brick, limestone and iron commercial terraced pair with a symmetrical facade designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.
