The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of North Fremantle. Historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the North Fremantle area. The place is a late simple example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryOriginally known as Mary Street, the majority of Herbert Street was developed between 1900 and 1910 (predominantly brick and stone houses), although some lots remained vacant until the immediate post-World War Two period (predominantly weatherboard houses). The street accommodated a mixture of owner/occupier residences and rental properties. Mary Street was gazetted as a public highway in 1905 and the name was changed to Herbert Street in 1922/23. House, 34 Herbert Street was built by 1907, when Arthur A. Ashton owned the house. By 1921/22, he held the five roomed brick house as a rental property leased to Francis W. Jones. Jones bought the place from Ashton in 1923-24, and he remained in residence until circa 1945. After this time, the title passed to the Smith family. Post Office Directories from 1947-49 record the occupant of the place as John Smith, and Rate records from 1955 onwards list Stella M. Smith as the owner. Stella Margaret Smith stayed there until her death in 1974, after which time the house was temporarily vacant. The house has had several owners since that time. A 1939 plan shows 34 Herbert Street as being a square house with full length front verandah and a full length enclosed weatherboard lean-to at the rear. There is only one small outbuilding in the rear yard of the double lot. This place was included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - BROWN -significant for making a positive contribution to the built environment of Fremantle. Physical DescriptionHouse, 34 Herbert Street, is a two storey stone and iron cottage with symmetrical facade designed as a late example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. Walls are limestone with brick quoins and reveals. The roof is hipped corrugated iron with no eaves. The verandah is under a separate corrugated iron roof with a small gable over the central front entry. The verandah is supported by timber posts. The front elevation is symmetrical with two timber sash windows and a central front door with top and side lights. A view from the side driveway shows alterations and additions to the rear with below ground garages and an altered roof form.
