The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryCharles Street was largely developed in the last decade of the nineteenth century and much of the housing stock still dates from this time. House, 4 Charles Street was built between 1896 and 1900. In 1900, the house was owned by Les Day and occupied by Mrs James Day. James Day was listed as the owner of the vacant lot in 1896. By 1905, the property was owned by D Hughes and occupied by George Grandiem. Local identity and developer, Frank Biddles, owned the cottage for a time c. 1915. Violet and Henry Atwell were the owners between c. 1922 and the early 1950s. It was then purchased by John Musham. The property formed part of Eileen Musham’s estate in 1991. A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated 1954 shows a weatherboard house with a full length front verandah. To the rear, there was a weatherboard addition and back verandah. A galvanised iron and weatherboard outbuilding was situated at the rear of the main building, on the western boundary. Physical Description4 Charles Street is a single storey timber and iron house constructed between 1896 and 1900 in the Victorian Georgian style of Architecture. The walls are timber framed and clad with timber weatherboards. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The verandah is under a separate corrugated iron roof supported by timber posts with one steel post on the corner. The symmetrical front façade has a central front door with fanlight flanked on either side by timber framed double hung sash windows. There is one brick corbelled chimney evident. There is a small extension to the side of the house with high dormer style windows. The house is situated at street level.
