The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryCharles Street was largely developed in the last decade of the nineteenth century and much of the housing stock still dates from this time. House, 6 Charles Street was built by 1896. In that year, it was described in the rate book as a cottage owned and occupied by James Day. Mr Day also owned the lot next door at 4 Charles Street, where he subsequently built another house. By 1900, House, 6 Charles Street was owned and occupied by David Hughes, and between c. 1905 and c. 1915 by Jessie Day. Ernest Atwell bought the property c. 1922 and continued to own it until the early 1960s. Mr Atwell rented this investment property to a succession of tenants. House, 6 Charles Street has had a number of owners since the mid-1960s. A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated 1954 shows a brick house with a projecting front room and a half length front verandah. There were relatively large galvanised iron additions to the rear, with a short verandah attached. Physical Description6 Charles Street is a single storey, limestone, brick and iron house with an asymmetrical facade constructed by 1896 and designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are limestone with red brick quoins. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The façade is asymmetrical with a protruding front room. The roof over the front room has a skylight and no eaves. The front room has a timber double hung sash window as is also evident to the right of the front door. The verandah has a separate corrugated iron bullnose roof supported on chamfered timber posts with frieze.
