The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is a late example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryKing William Street originally ran between Mandurah Road and Attfield street with Florence Street running from Mandurah Road to Marine Terrace. Circa 1936 the number ing of the street changed and Florence Street became an extension of King William Street. Later between 1949 and 1953 the street numbering changed again. The street was largely developed in the 1890s and early 1900s.
House, 19 King William Street was built c. 1902 on the site of an earlier cottage that had been built prior to 1896. In 1900, the Fremantle Rate book recorded that there was an ‘old cottage’ on the lot owned by D & AT White. In 1904/05, there was a cottage on the site, owned by Arthur White and occupied by Charles Fielding, a manager. Mr White owned the cottage until c. 1950 and rented it to a succession of tenants during this time. During this time (approximately 1936 the street number ing changed and with what was No.21 becoming No. 5 King and eventually between 1949 and 1953 it became the current No. 19. During Mr white's ownership the tenants included Simeon Talbot, THomas Lippingwell, Cecil Hancock, Charles, Chaplain, Jonathon Dunn and Laura Coward. In the early 1950s, House, 19 King William Street was owned and occupied by Leslie Coward. When Albert Wise bought it c. 1956, he rented it to tenants. A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated 1954 shows a brick cottage of similar proportions to that at No. 17. There were full length front and rear verandahs, with a laundry adjoining the south west corner of the back verandah. An asbestos garage was located towards the eastern side of the lot. By 1960, the property was owned and occupied by Francesco and Rosa De Rosa. Between c. 1970 and at least 2005, House, 19 King William Street was owned and occupied by Marianna Moretti. This place was included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - BROWN -significant for making a positive contribution to the built environment of Fremantle.
In August 2025 the place was retained as a LHS Level 3 retained on the Heritage List and Identified as a Contributory Place in the South Fremantle Heritage Area.Physical DescriptionHOUSE & LIMESTONE FEATURE(S), 19 KING WILLIAM STREET is a single storey, limestone, brick and iron house built c.1902 with a symmetrical facade designed as a late example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are limestone with red brick quoins. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The façade is symmetrical with a central front door with side and fanlights flanked on either side by casement windows. The verandah has a separate corrugated iron roof supported on timber posts. There is a face brick chimney evident.
