The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryKing William Street was called Florence Street until c. 1950. The street was largely developed in the 1890s and early 1900s. House, 22 King William Street was built between 1896 and 1900. In 1900, it was described in the rate book as a cottage owned and occupied by Thomas Butler, a cabman. Mr Butler lived in the cottage with three females and three other males, presumably his wife and children. Although the Butlers continued to own the cottage until c. 1920, by 1912/13, they had moved out and Frederick McDonough had moved in. The cottage was connected to the sewer in 1913. In 1922/23, House, 22 King William Street was owned and occupied by Sarah Clives. By the early 1940s, it had been bought by Arthur and Stella Ulph. A Metropolitan Sewerage diagram dated 1954 shows a weatherboard cottage built against the western boundary. the cottage had a full length front verandah and a weatherboard addition and verandah at the rear. A fence divided the back yard into roughly two equal portions. The portion behind the house had paving linking the house with a weatherboard outbuilding and leading to the rear section. The rear section was probably a garden, and there was a large galvanised iron shed against the northern boundary and an aviary against the back fence. In 1960, the property was owned by Mick and Kostandina Naidos, who continued to own it until at least 1982. House, 22 King William Street has had several owners since the late 1980s. This place was included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - RED -significant for contributing to the unique character of Fremantle. Physical Description22 King William Street is a single storey timber and iron house constructed c.1896 in the Victorian Georgian style of Architecture. The walls are timber framed and clad with timber weatherboards. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. The verandah is under a separate corrugated iron bullnose roof supported by turned timber posts with decorative timber brackets. The symmetrical front façade has a central front door with fanlight flanked on either side by timber framed double hung sash windows with iron security grills. There is a chimney evident. The house is situated at street level.
