The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the South Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.ArchaeologyConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryMcLaren Street was originally called Edward Street. The name was changed to Silas Street in 1901/902 in honour of William Silas Pearce, a local business identity. The street was renamed McLaren Street in 1931, this time in honour of F J McLaren, who was Mayor of Fremantle from 1912 to 1914. House, 14 McLaren Street was built c. 1900. In 1900, the cottage was owned by Thomas Allen and occupied by Elizabeth Jeffrey. David Peatling owned and occupied the house between c. 1915 until his death c. 1940. Amy Peatling was then listed as the occupant of the house, and was listed as the registered owner from c. 1965 until she sold the property in 1981. A diagram dated 1954 shows the house as being a large brick house with a full length front verandahs. There were also verandahs on either side of the house. A centrally located path led from the street to the front door, and another paved area provided a drive down the side of the house to the back. This linked to a path running from the back door to a galvanised iron shed in the back yard (presumably a workshop). This place was included in the "Heritage Study South Fremantle", prepared by John Taylor Architects, for the City of Fremantle, June 1993. It was also included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - RED -significant for contributing to the unique character of Fremantle. Physical DescriptionSingle storey rendered masonry and iron cottage with a symmetrical facade designed as a late example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are rendered masonry. The roof hipped with half gables, no eaves and clad with corrugated iron. The verandah is under a continuous iron roof with square timber posts. The verandah extends around the sides of the house. The front facade is symmetrical with a central front door and timber framed windows either side.
