Duplex, 185 South Terrace (and its pair Duplex, 187 South Terrace) was built in 1903/04 for David Hughes. The land had been part of a large estate granted to John Bruce, Lieutenant Colonel of the Pensioner Guards in 1851. From 1891, it was owned by Henry Briggs, who subdivided it circa 1902.
A 1907 plan shows the two brick duplex cottages as a mirror pair. Both had full length front verandahs and the outer ends of the rear verandahs were enclosed to provide a small bathroom. A fence divided the front and rear yards. (An identical pair of duplexes to the north have been demolished).
Following David Hugh’s death in 1904, title was held by his estate until 1909, when both duplexes were bought by William Monroe, a contractor. By 1920, Filippo Carello, a market gardener, was the owner. Florence Hearne bought the properties in 1922 and William Whittley in 1935. Robena Murphy was the owner from 1949 to 1977, when title passed to Maxwell and Caroline Thomson. Duplex, 185 South Terrace was a rental property throughout this time.
Duplex, 185 South Terrace has had several owners since the late 1970s. The living room and bathroom were altered in 1979. Since 1981, it has been registered on a strata plan.
