The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of a commercial building in the Fremantle area.ConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistorySouth Terrace was previously called Mandurah Road.
Commercial Building, 227-227A (formerly 227-229) South Terrace was built in 1899 for Samson Henville. A 1907 diagram shows a a pair of brick terraced shops. Both were built to the street boundary and had centrally located recessed front entries. A front verandah across both shop fronts extended over the footpath. Both shops had weatherboard additions at the rear, and there were weatherboard and galvanised iron outbuildings and stable built against the back fence. At this time, the shops were numbered 103 and 105 Mandurah Road.
By 1910/11, the property was owned and occupied by John Cooke. Cooke was the Mayor of Fremantle from 1924 to 1926. Francis McMahon was the owner in the 1930s and 1940s. By 1954, a galvanised iron structure had been built to the south of the building, and the stable removed and replaced with a galvanised iron building.
By 1969, Commercial Building, 227-299 South Terrace y was owned by Rudolf Humich and had been converted into four rudimentary flats. The front flats comprised only a kitchen and bedroom; the rear flats also had a sitting room. All residents shared one toilet and bathroom. Bathroom and laundry additions were made in 1978.
Circa 2000, the building was reverted to retail use.
In August 2025 the place was changed from a LHS Level 3 to Level 2, retained on the Heritage List and Identified as a Contributory Place in the South Fremantle Heritage Area.Physical Description227 - 229 South Terrace is a single storey brick commercial building of two shops, constructed in c1899. The walls are face brick with a simple parapet. There are recessed front entrances and rendered upstands to the shop front windows. There is a corrugated iron bullnose verandah supported on timber posts across the front of both shops.
