No.1081 – Trooper Alfred Bruce Cox – 10th Light Horse Regiment
Alfred Bruce Cox was born in Kalamunda WA to John & Charlotte Cox. The family lived in South Fremantle and Alfred was educated at Fremantle Boys School. After leaving school he took up work as a labourer and then became an assistant engineer. His address was 37 Hulbert Street South Fremantle. On the 8th March 1915 he offered his services to the AIF and was accepted as fit with the medical examiner finding Alfred to be 5 fee 6 & ¼ inches in height; weight of 148 lbs; chest measurement of 34-36 inches; dark complexion; blue eyes and dark brown hair. His religious denomination was Church of England.
Alfred was initially allotted to No.12 Depot camp where he stayed until the 20th April 1915. On this date he was sent to No.2 Depot Squadron where training for the Light Horse took place. On the 15th May 1915 Alfred was assigned for overseas service with the 7th Reinforcements to the 10th Light Horse Regiment. This group trained in WA for another month when they were told to get ready for departure.
On the 30th June 1915, Alfred and the 7th Reinforcements boarded the H.M.A.T. “Kanowna” in Fremantle Harbour and embarked for Egypt.
During the voyage Alfred Cox was admitted to the ships hospital suffering from heat apoplexy and he died from this on the 25th July 1915. He was given a burial at sea and is therefore commemorated on the Chatby Memorial Egypt.
