HMAS Perth has a close relationship to Fremantle, having visited the City many times since World War Two. There have been three ships named HMAS Perth as part of the Royal Australian Navy and all three visited and berthed at Fremantle Port. The original HMAS Perth was built in England in 1933 and it was transferred to the Royal Australian Navy in 1939. This ship served in World War Two and had a distinguished history during its short existence.
Her arrival in Fremantle on the 6th August 1941 saw the ship feted by Western Australians whose capital she was named for. Twenty eight days leave was granted to the Western Australians who comprised Perth’s Company before she continued her voyage across the Great Australian Bight bound for Sydney.
HMAS Perth and USS Houston were sunk by the Japanese Navy off Java in March 1942. The reunion which took place in 1992 was the 50th anniversary of the sinking.Relevance to the CityFremantle has a long history with the three ships of the Royal Australian Navy called HMAS Perth.
