This plaque has a wooden base with a painted clay piece depicting the badge used by the HMS Odin. It shows a side profile of the Norse god Odin in front of a red background. It is encircled by a gold-coloured knot with “ODIN” written at the top in a typewriter typeface inside a black rectangle. Above this is the naval crown, which features a ship flanked by sails.DateBetween 1st January 1972 and 31st December 1975ProvenanceThe HMS Odin (S10) was an Oberon-class submarine used by the Royal Navy. It is the second submarine to be named HMS Odin following the HMS Odin (N84) which was an O-class submarine commissioned 21 December 1929 and sunk by Italian ships during WWII on 13 June 1940. There were also previously three ships named HMS Odin; one captured from Denmark in 1807, one launched in 1846 and one launched in 1901. The HMS Odin (S10) was laid down 27 April 1959 by Cammell Laird in Birkenhead, England. Cammell Laird is a shipbuilding company which was formed in 1903 following the merger of the Laird Brothers and Johnson Cammell & Co and is still an active company as of 2024. The submarine was launched 4 November 1960 and commissioned 3 May 1962 before being decommissioned 18 October 1990 and on 10 October 1991 was scrapped. From December 1972 to 15 September 1975 the HMS Odin was part of the First Australian Submarine Squadron and was based in Sydney during this time. During its tenure it operated frequently in the Singapore area. The only documented time the submarine was to be in Fremantle appears to be from a 13 December 1973 Royal Australian Navy press release, stating the HMS Odin was returning from Singapore to Sydney via Fremantle. There may have been other occasions the submarine visited Fremantle; a contemporary Royal Australian Navy News edition from 10 October 1975 states the submarine made numerous visits to Australian ports but it is unclear if that includes Fremantle. Also unclear is who the Commanding Officer at the time was, but the mayor of the City of Fremantle at this time was William A. McKenzie, who held office from 1972-1984.
