(There was an initial operation before Admiral Richard Byrd proposed 'Deep Freeze'). Given the continuing and constant US presence in Antarctica since that date, "Operation Deep Freeze" has come to be used as a general term for US operations in that continent, and in particular for the regular missions to resupply US Antarctic bases, coordinated by the United States military.Relevance to the CityShows the long term relationship Fremantle has with the US Navy – While Operation Deep Freeze was based in Antarctica, this plaque was presented to Fremantle by Rear Admiral Welch in 1970 to commemorate the Coral Sea Action in World War Two. Rear Admiral Welch was in charge of Operation Deep Freeze until 1972 when he retired. This plaque was presented to the City of Fremantle in 1970.
