HMAS ORION, named after the constellation was built in Scotland and commissioned in 1977. The submarined was designed for intelligence gathering and conducted numerous patrols in Australia, Asia and European waters, in particular countering the Soviet Navy capabilities.
It’s home port was in New South Wales but visited Fremantle & HMAS Stirling many times before the submarined was decommissioned in 1996. After it was decommissioned it stayed at Garden Island just south of Fremantle until 2003, when parts of the submarine were sold for scrap. The fin of the ORION was gifted to the City of Rockingham where it is now on display, and the port propellor was donated to the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle.Relevance to the CityHMAS ORION spent much of her service in Western Australian waters and was decommissioned just south of Fremantle.
