The plaque was gifted to the Mayor and City upon a visit by the Fremantle & Diamantina associationDateBetween 1st January 1943 and 31st December 2021ProvenanceThere have been two different ships of the Royal Australian Navy with the name HMAS FREMANTLE. The first served as a Patrol Boat and Mine Sweeper during the Second World War, being decommissioned in 1959 and the 2nd HMAS Fremantle served between 1978 to 2006.
There have been two ships in the Royal Australian Navy with the name HMAS DIAMANTINA. The first of that name was a Frigate and was in service of the Royal Australian Navy from 1943 to 1980. The ship spent nearly twenty years associated with Fremantle and it’s waters. After it’s decommissioning the ship was put on display in Brisbane.
The 2nd HMAS DIAMANTINA was commissioned in 2002 and is a mine hunter coastal vessel. As of 2021 it is still in service of the Royal Australian Navy.
When HMAS Fremantle was decommissioned in 1959 the crew was transferred to the HMAS DIAMANTINA. During this time the ships were involved in observations of the Atomic testing in the Pacific Islands.Relevance to the CityHMAS FREMANTLE bears the City’s name and spent a lot of it’s service in Western Australian waters. The HMAS DIAMANTINA spent nearly twenty years based just south of Fremantle. Many of the sailors who served on both vessels were Western Australian and the Association met frequently in Fremantle.
