The plaque was gifted to the Mayor and City upon a visit by the Ships Commanding Officer on a deployment to Fremantle.DateBetween 1st December 1986 and 31st December 1991ProvenanceThere have been three different ships of the Royal Australian Navy with the name HMAS STUART. The first served during the 2nd World War when a ship of the Royal Navy HMS STUART was taken over BY THE Royal Australian Navy from Britain.
However, this plaque is associated with the 2nd HMAS STUART.
HMAS STUART was a Destroyer Escort/Anti Submarine Frigate, commissioned in 1959 by the Royal Australian Navy. It continued with the name of the British Naval ship it was initially named after.
The ship then served in the Vietnam War, and spent nearly thirty years in Australian and Asian waters
The ship has a long link with Fremantle, having visited many times and was also based at Fleet West for different periods of time. At one stage the majority of it’s crew were from Western Australia.
The ship was decommissioned in 1991.
After her decommissioning in 1991 the HMAS STUART was scrapped. In 2002 a third HMAS STUART was commissionedRelevance to the CityHMAS STUART served in the Royal Australian Navy in the defence of Australian waters and has been based around Fremantle for some of her service. Many of her crew were from Western Australia.
